Lucky Dragon Hyson Green Tea
Black Bay Teas
$14.00USD for 2oz
Black Bay Teas was started in 2017 by a friend of mine and her Mother. They decided to do some re-branding and have opened a brand new Etsy shop. I have recently been contacted to help with marketing. While I am considered an affiliate of the company, I give my true and honest opinion of their teas in my reviews. I would not be willing to work closely with a company I did not believe in. I am very excited to review their Lucky Dragon Hyson.
The description of this tea on their website is perfect:
Lucky Dragon Hyson Green Tea is from the Anhui Province of China. It produces a delightfully fresh cup of green tea. Relax as you watch each leaf unfurl and create an exceptional cup of tea. As with other green teas, use a lower temperature water (175º F) and be sure to let it step for at least 3 minutes. As a green tea it is high in antioxidants and very refreshing.
Packaging
Black Bay Teas uses solid black, heat sealed, resealable bags for their packaging. Their teas come labeled with the name of the tea and marked with what kind of tea, which also includes steeping instructions. My teas arrived in their old packaging since I just received small samples. They are light proof but not resealable.
When I poured the Lucky Dragon Hyson into my Gaiwan I was greeted by an incredibly pleasant and sweet scent. It almost didn’t smell like a green tea. There was a light, crisp sweetness about it. The curled leaves were multiple shades of green.
How to Brew
The instructions on the bag say to steep green teas at 175ºF for 2-3 minutes. In my experience, some traditional green teas only need to steep for 45 seconds so I was interested to see how their Lucky Dragon Hyson would do. I started with 2 minutes. I found the aroma to be incredibly sweet but there was a little bitterness to the flavor that I knew wasn’t normal for this tea so I tried again. Next, I tried to steep for 45 seconds, since that is my sweet spot for many other green teas. The flavor was much more crisp and much sweeter this time, but a bit light. Finally, I steeped for 3 minutes and this was perfect. It was crisp and sweet and had just the right vegital flavor that I love in a green tea. There are very few green teas, in my experience, that do better steeping longer.
I also really enjoyed watching the leaves unfurl as they brewed. Absolutely beautiful! The color of leaves brightened as they unfurled.
The Experience
Black Bay Tea’s Lucky Dragon Hyson steeped to a deep yellow color. The sweet aroma is the perfect onset for the sweet vegetal flavor of the tea. This Green Tea would be perfect paired with a sushi and/or fish dinner. I enjoyed experimenting with steeping times with this tea to find the perfect time, for me. As I have said before, my steep times are a guideline. You have to find what works best for you.
I was able to steep this tea 4 times before the flavor was too light for my preference. If you like lighter green teas, you could absolutely get away with a 5th or 6th steeping!
If you like green teas, I highly recommend Black Bay Tea’s Lucky Dragon Hyson! You get a really good quality for a good price. This would make a really nice morning or evening tea. I will definitely be making this one again soon!
After my last steeping the leaves in my Gaiwan were absolutely beautiful! The colors of the leaves completely transformed as they opened.
