I received this amazing Bao Chung in my May Sips By Subscription Box! I received a fantastic set of teas and was so excited to try them all. If you haven’t looked into Sips By and are looking for a way to try new teas, absolutely check them out!!

Packaging

My sample of Bao Chung from Terroir Tea Merchant arrived in a heat sealed, light proof, resealable pouch. On the pouch is the company label and information about the tea. The label includes the name, origin (which is so cool!), type of tea, altitude, and steeping instructions. I love that the company gives you so much information about the tea! Typically you would have to go to the company website to look up all of this information. This Bao Chung is from Pinglin, Taiwan and is grown at a low altitude.

When I opened the bag I was first greeted by a vegetal aroma. Once I took some of the tea out of the pouch there was a super sweet honey smell to it as well. It smelled incredible. I love a sweet oolong.

How to Brew

The instructions on the bag say to use 2-3tsp per cup at 194ºF for 3 minutes. This is exactly what I would expect out of an oolong so I was all set to go! I put some tea leaves in my Gaiwan and let it sit for the recommended 3 minutes. As it brewed, the sweet honey aroma came out even more.

The leaves were multiple shades of greens that brightened as they brewed. I followed the instructions on the bag and could not have been happier with the outcome. While it had the vegetal oolong taste that I love, it was so smooth and buttery on the tongue. I couldn’t wait to make a second cup, and a third.

The Experience

Bao Chung Oolong from Terroir Tea Merchant steeped to a pale yellow, just about the color of butter. Which fit considering the sweet buttery taste. The leaves were beautiful as they opened. As I said before, they brightened as they steeped. It was a wonderful experience. I was able to steep this tea 4 times before the flavor was too light for me. It was still buttery smooth and could have been brewed a couple more times if you enjoy lighter flavored teas.

This would make a wonderful after dinner tea paired with a bread pudding or a morning tea with honey biscuits. Yum! This is absolutely a tea that I will keep on hand. You can not beat the price for the quality! If you are looking for a good, smooth oolong I highly recommend giving this Bao Chung from Terroir Tea Merchant a try.
