CuppaTea

$49.99USD for 3.5oz (100g)

I came across an ad for CuppaTea on Facebook. They were advertising a 5 pack of Matcha samples for FREE just pay shipping! I LOVE Matcha and any opportunity to try new brands is one that I will jump on! My samples arrived quickly and I decided to use one of the samples as that week’s Tea Trivia Tuesday giveaway on Instagram. I have to share the love!

Packaging

My samples arrived in super cute little heat sealed packages. On each package was a label with the name of the Matcha, a brief description of the benefits of Matcha and how it can be used. Also the website for future orders. There were not steeping instructions on the packaging but matcha is very easy to make at the right temperature. You can also find brewing instructions on the website if you are concerned.

I love the description on the website:

Our Premium Organic stone-ground Matcha is vibrant green in color and possesses many healing properties and health benefits along with a smooth, savory flavor. Matcha contains far more nutrients and antioxidants than all other teas and studies have shown it lowers cholesterol as well as the risk of liver disease. Furthermore, Matcha contains a unique amino acid called L-theanine, which helps the body stay energized and the mind stays alert.

I was a little concerned when I first picked up this package that there wasn’t actually anything in it. Typically, even a powder can be felt in a package. I could feel the matcha in the other 4 samples so I wasn’t sure why this one felt so empty. Either way, I was looking forward to giving it a try.

How to Brew

The sample was exactly that, a sample. This would not make a normal cup of Matcha for me but it was plenty to give it a try.

There were no steeping instructions on the packaging so I jumped onto their website to see what they recommended. They recommend using 180ºF water. That is a little hotter than I normally use for green tea in general. I typically go around 170ºF for Matcha. Since I only had one shot to get it right I went with my temperature to be sure I didn’t burn it.

The Experience

CuppaTea’s Premium Matcha brewed to a vibrant green color, it was a very unique color for Matcha in my experience. It smelled sweet with an incredibly pleasant umami aroma. It whisked up nicely and created a very nice foam as I whisked.

To the palate it was very earthy. There was a slight astringency but it was still very smooth. The sweetness that I got as I made the Matcha did not transfer to the taste. It was a good Matcha but not my favorite. I was surprised considering their company has been featured on a couple “Top 5” Matcha articles. While I would drink this if I had more of it, it is not one that I would go and stock up on. I am interested to try a couple of their flavored Matcha’s in the future.
