Upside Down By Grimoire Tea
Upside Down Black Tea
Grimoire Tea
$8.00USD for 8-10 Cups
I purchased a set of 10 samples from Grimoire Tea, including this Upside Down Black Tea sample. This was an exclusive sample set that was offered, through Instagram, to the first 10 people to claim one. After claiming, I received permission to use the teas on my blog.
Ingredients
Black Tea, Caramel, Chocolate, and Sea Salt
Packaging
I have said before how much I LOVE how teas are packaged from Grimoire Tea. When you purchase tea from Grimoire Tea, they arrive in the cutest little glass bottles with the most unique labels giving the name and description of the tea purchased. You can tell that she takes the time to really think about what she is representing when coming up with her labels. If you have watched Season 1 of Stranger Things you will know the significance of the lights and the alphabet on the label. The top is reinforced by a solid layer of colored wax. This company could not have been more unique with their packaging! I just love it! The only thing that would make the labels better would be steeping instructions.
Because I ordered a sample set, my teas arrived in little resealable plastic bags. Absolutely appropriate for what I paid for! When I opened the bag, I was immediately greeted by a very pleasant smell of black tea and caramel. You can clearly see each ingredient. The caramel, chocolate pieces, even the sea salt. I actually thought the white specs were coconut instead of sea salt but I have been reassured it is in fact sea salt.
How to Brew
Since this is a black tea, and there were no steeping instructions on the sample packs, I went with normal black tea steeping times and temperatures. Black teas steep at 195ºF for 3 minutes.
The Experience
This was a beautiful tea to watch steep. You could see the chocolate and sea salt melt into the hot water. The aroma changed as the tea steeped as well. It went from a primarily caramel scent to a pleasant mix of chocolate and sea salt. It is an excellent example of the perfect mix between sweet and savory. The Upside Down steeped to a very pretty reddish-brown color. The tea itself was very sweet. I tasted a lot of the chocolate and caramel, I did not add any sweetener to it, but you could if you wanted to bring out a touch more of the sweet. The aftertaste however, had just the right amount of salt in the mix.
I really enjoyed each sip of this tea. It was a bit strange to still taste the salt 30+ minutes after I finished the cup. While this may not be one that I would keep on hand, it is absolutely perfect for an after dinner dessert tea. The Upside Down would also probably make a really nice latte. I may try that with what I have left. If you enjoy dessert teas this is a must try!

Edit 7/23/18- I used the rest of my sample to make a latte and it was FANTASTIC!! I added a couple rocks of Teavana’s Beet Root Sugar to enhance the sweetness and warmed the milk on the stove! Just another yummy way to enjoy this wonderful tea!
