I was contacted by LH Tea Farmer Family on Instagram. They saw a post I had up on another tea and asked if I would be interested in trying a couple of theirs. Of, course I was super excited and replied to their comments quickly. We talked through Instagram messenger about my history with tea and their amazing family experience in the tea industry. We chatted for awhile about the kinds of teas I typically drink and after agreeing on a couple, I told them to surprise me with a couple more. I did pay for shipping for these teas since shipping to the United States from China can be incredibly costly.

Packaging

My samples arrived in little heat sealed ziplock bags with the names written in both English and Chinese which was great. This was the only information on the Packaging. Since I only got samples, I would assume their real packaging comes with a lot more detail. I was able to find a nice description of the tea as well as steeping instructions on their website.

When I opened the pouch I was greeted by a sweet, floral, honey aroma. It smelled wonderful. I knew that if it tasted as good as it smelled I would be in absolute heaven.

I was intrigued by the information on the website. This Honey Orchid Oolong comes from an ancient tea bush that is over 300 years old. There is a gorgeous picture of the bush on their website! I would love to visit one day.

How to Brew

Dry Leaves

Since there were no steeping instructions on the packaging I looked to their website for guidance. The website suggests 5-8grams for a 120-150cc gaiwan or yixing tea pot brewed at 203ºF. LH Tea Farmer Family CN recommends rinsing the tea quickly before the first infusion. After the rinse there was a deep floral aroma. The rinse hightened the smell of the dry leaves. It smelled incredible. They suggest starting with a 3-5 second infusion and adding additional 3-5 seconds for each additional infusion.

The Experience

Wet leaves following one infusion

Following the instrucions, my first infusion of my Wu Dong Mi Lan Xiang sat for 5 seconds. It steeped to a deep yellow color. I found there to be very little flavor to the first infusion. It was too light for my taste. My second infusion sat for 10 seconds, I found it to still be very light with a oddly pleasant bitter edge. There was a lovely sweet honey aftertaste that left me curious for more. I found the longer the tea sat the more floral it became. There was a light astringency that followed throughout the entire session. Surprisingly, I found that as it cooled it tasted sweeter and a slight fruity flavor came out.

I really wanted to fall in love with this tea. The aroma from start to finish was amazing. There was something about the bitterness that lingered that caused me to end the session earlier than I probably could have. I just wasn’t in love. What I found most interesting- when I went to sip the tea after it had cooled a bit, the fruity sweet flavor was much more pronounced and much more pleasant. I am curious what this tea would be like cold steeped. I have a bit left and will probably play with it a bit to see what happens. I’ll be sure to update the blog post after I cold steep the remaining tea.

LH Tea Farmer Family CN is a wonderful company. I have enjoyed getting to know them on Instagram and highly recommend their teas for their quality. I have learned a lot about the family over the last few months and it has been a joy.
